Documentary/Visual Essay
How do you visually tell the story of a neighborhood that is disappearing? "Walking Down 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, NY" explores the stories of 4th Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This avenue is a quieter sibling to the neighboring 5th Ave., which is more frequented for the famous park facing the Manhattan skyline. For over a month, I walked up and down the avenue, introducing myself to the longtime residents, and listening to their 4th avenue stories. This is a neighborhood with deep Latine/x roots facing rapid change due to gentrification. This project began from an assignment in “What is the Story?”, a class taught by Stephen Ferry at the International Center of Photography.
